Design 017/101

Homework: Today, you will make a notebook, a simple notebook. One constraint: your notebook must be made according to the golden proportions. This means that the ratio between your notebook’s short and long side should be of 1.618.

Design 1o1 Flotilla under the leadership of Captain Designer reached Athens Acropolis today. We are going to talk about measurements. Why? Because measurement and accurate proportion give taste to your pizza, make your design alluring and attractive.

Harmony under the net of Language

According to Ludwig Wittgenstein, language corrupts the beauty; beauty comes from harmony. Today I have explored the complex language of golden rule and created a harmonized beautiful diary by trying to make its lengths accurate.

The Process:

First of all I made my different Instant Notebooks for making notes. Than I started working on the project which is not very difficult but quite tricky. First, I drew the right triangle using an A4 sheet, but it was difficult to mark the arcs because my compass couldn't open to the line segment BC. But I did make a rough diagram to have an idea.
However, I analysed the formula that is a+b/a = b/a = phi = 1.6180339887....
I thought to make different proportions of a and b so that the result would come either 1.6180339887 or around it. I made different proportions and came up with two.
  1. a = 20.4 cm and b = 12.6 cm; by using the formula it comes 1.617647.
  2. a = 11.5 cm and b =7.1 cm; which is equals to 1.6173913.
The second proportion results into a palm sized diary. So I started working on the proportion number one.
